Two frameworks for a full week

Seven days: the classic loop

Budapest for three nights, Eger for one, Tokaj for one, then back through Budapest to Lake Balaton for two. All achievable by train with one hire car day in Tokaj if you want to reach the smaller cellars.

Days 1–3: Budapest — baths, Castle Hill, Parliament, market halls, ruin bars.
Day 4: Train to Eger. Castle, minaret, cellar valley in the afternoon.
Day 5: Onward to Tokaj. Aszú tasting and the Rákóczi cellar.
Day 6: Return via Budapest to Balatonfüred.
Day 7: Tihany peninsula, lake swim, ferry, departure.

Seven days: thermal & slow

For travellers who want water, food and very little rushing. Two bases only, both with excellent thermal facilities and good restaurants within walking distance.

Days 1–4: Budapest, with a different bath every other morning — Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas, Lukács.
Day 2 optional: Szentendre half day by HÉV.
Days 5–7: Hévíz and Keszthely — float in the thermal lake, visit Festetics Palace, day trip to Badacsony.
Pace: one fixed activity per day, no more.

Planning rules

How we build these routes

One major sight per half-day. Hungarian museums and baths reward depth, not speed.
Lunch is fixed at 12:30–14:00. That is when daily menus are served and kitchens are at their best.
Never plan a cellar visit and a same-day drive. The legal alcohol limit for drivers is zero.
Monday closures. Most Hungarian museums close on Mondays; baths do not.
Train first, car only when necessary. Intercity rail is cheap, punctual and reaches almost everywhere in this guide.
Leave one unscheduled evening. It is usually the one you remember.
