The route

Why this order, and not the other way round

Most tours run Esztergom first. We do the reverse: Szentendre early while it is empty, Visegrád in the middle when you have the energy for a citadel climb, and Esztergom last, arriving as the basilica's west front catches the late light. It also means the final leg home is a comfortable direct train rather than a rural bus.

The three stops

What you actually see

Colourful houses on a cobbled lane in SzentendreStop 1

Szentendre

Serbian Orthodox churches, an artists' colony and a triangular main square. Ninety minutes is enough if you skip the museums.

Visegrád

A thirteenth-century citadel 350 metres above the river, plus the excavated Renaissance palace of King Matthias below. The view down the Bend is the reason people come.

Esztergom

Hungary's largest church and the seat of its Catholic primate, on the hill where King Stephen was crowned in 1000 AD. Climb the cupola for a view into Slovakia.

Alternatives

Three ways to vary the day

What to bring

Proper shoes for the citadel path, water, cash in small notes for rural buses and ferry kiosks, and a printed or downloaded timetable — mobile coverage is patchy in the hills above Visegrád. Pack a layer even in summer: the river generates wind in the Bend and the basilica interior is cold.

Questions

Danube Bend FAQ

Can I do this on a guided tour instead?
Yes, plenty of operators run it. The trade-off is time: coach tours typically give you 45 minutes per stop and include a shop visit. Doing it independently costs about a third as much and gives you twice the time on the ground.
Is the citadel climb hard?
The footpath from the village is a steady 30–40 minute ascent on loose stone. A local minibus (bus 891 in season) runs to the top for those who prefer to ride up and walk down.
What if the ferries are not running?
Bus 880 covers the entire Szentendre–Visegrád–Esztergom corridor year-round, so the itinerary still works. Only the scenic river crossings are seasonal.
Is one day enough?
It is enough for a good overview. If you want to hike, or to see the Skanzen properly, split it into two days and stay overnight in Visegrád or Esztergom.
